Jobs for Illinois Graduates (JILG) is proud to feature Kenwood Academy. Kenwood is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. The total enrollment at Kenwood is approximately 1600 students. Kenwood serves students from various neighborhoods in Chicago, including Hyde Park, Bronzeville, South Shore, and Kenwood.

Currently, the JILG program at Kenwood serves 45 students on its’ In-School roster, and 35 Follow-up students from the class of 2006. JILG is in its’ second year at Kenwood Academy.

Sydney Hannah-Holliday has done an outstanding job as Career Specialist in her first year with the program. She has worked to incorporate Kenwood’s mission, College, with the goals for Jobs for Illinois Graduates by incorporating workshops for completing college applications, writing essays, and attaining recommendations. IN addition, the Kenwood JILG program has developed relationships with area colleges as a support to the on-going classroom activities.

The JILG classroom has served as a venue for local professionals to offer their support and mentoring to Kenwood students. On Fridays, Ms. Hannah-Holliday hosts “All About College Fridays” and “Finance Fridays”. The “Fridays” series is intriguing and immediately pertinent to students. Students walk away with immediate solutions to looming questions and problems as well as interest in financial career fields and options.

Recently, the Kenwood JILG students visited the Chicago Food Depository, where they helped load bins, and package, label, weigh, and prepare food for shipping. The Kenwood students learned a great deal from this experience, as reflected in the words of student Harvey Williams, “We don’t have to be in the face of the problem to be the solution.”

About the Specialists

Sydney Hannah-Holliday is in her first year as a JILG Career Specialists. In fact, this is her first teaching assignment. She is a recent graduate of DePaul University, Chicago, where she studied Secondary Education with a Concentration in Math.

The best moment in JILG occurred during the Initiation and Installation ceremony in November. As they were inducted into the Illinois Career Association, students adopted the sense of purpose, meaning, and acceptance. The students really enjoyed and took pride in making sure everything was perfect for the evening, everything from their attire to the room and buffet set-up. It was beautiful to see such wonderful and positive change and feeling come over them.”
