Lawrenceville High School sits on the Embarras River in the southeast corner of the state, right on the Indiana border. LHS was once the home of the Indian refinery and known for their successful basketball team that went 68-0 and won the 1982-83 state basketball championship. Unfortunately, with the refinery gone, it is like a lot of other small towns struggling to survive. It is a very proud community and with all it has had to endure, it is still a very welcoming town.LHS celebrated 100 years this past year. Quite an accomplishment for a graceful, old, but beautiful building. Rumor has it that the school is haunted by the Librarian that was killed in the building. Students come from Lawrenceville, St. Francisville, Flat Rock, Birds, and Russellville. Enrollment is around 350.
This year JILG is serving 17 juniors and 21 seniors. We started off the school year by helping with “Meet the Teacher Night.” We attended the St. Louis Cardinal Career Day, helped bring awareness to the Humane Society at the annual Day in the Park. We just completed our first Career Fair.
Our service learning projects this year consist of serving at several banquets, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, and having an ice cream social to raise funds for the Red Cross.
About the Specialist
Francie Scott is the JILG career specialist at Lawrenceville High School, Lawrenceville, IL. This is her 4th year with JILG and she has been teaching for 16 years.
My favorite activity would have to be seeing the students each year as they attend LDC. They grow so much in such a short time and bring back so much to the rest of the students. This year’s favorite moment would have to be our ice cream social for Red Cross. This project was completely theirs and they did such a tremendous job! Sometimes the best moments are after they have graduated and you get that frantic call and know that when you are done talking with them, they realize everything is going to be alright.
