As part of the JILG curriculum each participating student becomes a member of the Illinois Career Association where they develop leadership skills, participate in social and civic activities, and organize community service learning projects. Each student is required to do a minimum of 10 hours of service learning a year, but most average over 15 hours a year. Through the JILG Cares program the students select their own community service project that they want to support and take on the responsibility of organizing all the details around the project in addition to gaining insight into the following.
Leadership development skills are introduced to the students through conferences, election of officers, training and workshops, and meetings with professional leaders from the community.
Career Preparation is achieved by orienting the students toward career possibilities through field trips, workshops, job fairs, and career development conferences. As a member the student will also be counseled in personal motivation, attitude, and employment skills needed in pursuing a career.
Citizenship is a critical part of the learning experience. The ICA members recognize their obligations to the community by working with charitable organizations and through civic appearances. These activities increase confidence and self-esteem and provide a valuable service to citizens in the community.
Social Awareness skills are developed through social activities that provide an outlet for student enthusiasm, motivation, and membership interaction. Students gain knowledge of social graces, poise, and professional etiquette through recreational activities, image building projects, and participation in school social and recreational programs.
